The Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) served as a "World War Zero" precursor to WWI, teaching Western powers that modern industrial warfare required immense logistical capability, machine guns, and artillery. It shattered the illusion of Western racial invincibility, signaling Japan's emergence as a major power and revealing deep flaws in Russian autocratic leadership.

Key lessons learned by the West include:

Precursor to Total War: The conflict demonstrated that modern warfare would be fought with, and decided by, industrial capacity, rapid logistics (railroads), and overwhelming ammunition supplies.

Military Technology Changes: Western observers saw that new technologies like machine guns, rapid-fire artillery, and improved naval vessels made traditional cavalry and slow-moving infantry tactics obsolete.

Failed Tactical Inferences: Despite the evidence, many Western military leaders drew wrong conclusions, believing that spirited, rapid frontal assaults could still win battles, a misunderstanding that led to high casualties in World War I.

Naval Warfare Modernization: The Battle of Tsushima, where Japan’s fleet annihilated Russia’s, emphasized the importance of modernized, faster, and better-supplied navies.
