Hi
This is Bf109 1407 handed over to Luftwaffe November 1939.
It is possible that on the 27th June 1940 ‘1407?’ ‘<|+-’ of Stab II/JG77 suffered 10% damage in combat south of Stavanger. After repair it was issued to 5./JG77 and coded up as ‘Black 2’ of 5./JG77
On the 27th November 1940 both Bf109 E-3 ‘1407’ ‘Schwarz 2’ and Bf109 E-1 ‘3590’ ‘Schwarz 8’ suffered 20% damage whilst undertaking emergency landings on the island of Hitra. Norway whilst on a delivery flight to I/JG77. There is a photo of Black 2 in Mombeek/Prien book.
After repair in early 1941 it was issued to I/JG77. The final loss is recorded as 17th July 1941 when coded ‘Rot 5’ of 14./JG77. It seems certain the pilot was Lt Hans Mahlkuch. He was known to have been shot down, belly landing on a lake in the summer of 1941 and returning to Petsamo with no boots. He was killed a month later flying Bf109 E-3 W.Nr1118 ‘Rot 5’ of 14./JG77.
Unfortunately the DTM have it marked up as Red 5 with the II/JG77 Gruppe shield.
Another interesting discover was the tailplane was painted yellow, though never fully establish whether this was only to the undersde. Unfortunately little was recorded on the markings/Stkz etc when it was restored.
i am trying to get photos from the Russian diver who recovered it but without success.
regards
Mark
Короче - сбили его 17 июля 41, сел самолет на воду где-то в Карелии или в районе Мурманска и утонул в озере. Илья - тебе слово - где его добыли.
