It was the growing list of casualties, particularly among experienced formation leaders, which was beginning to give rise to concern. On 8 April [я - May] Leutnant Helmut Haberda, Kapitän of 5./JG 52 was killed in a dogfight. Forty-eight hours later another Staffelkapitän - 9./JG 52's Hauptmann Ernst Ehrenberg, who had taken over the Karayas'from Hermann Graf- was lost. On that same 10 May Major Helmut Bennemann, Kommandeur of I./JG 52, was so severely wounded that he could no longer lead the Gruppe. And so it went on. Willi Nemitz's successor at the head of 6. Staffel, Oberleutnant Karl Ritzenberger, lasted just over a month. He was shot down by a Yak over Novorossisk on 24 May. Knight's Cross holder Oberleutnant Rudolf Miethig, the Kapitän of 3./JG 52, was killed in the resulting crash when he claimed his 101st victory by ramming on 10 June. In all, the Geschwader's casualties from April to June totalled 23 pilots killed or missing, plus 14 wounded.
